HGF Receptors: MET

Normal Biology

  • c-MET is a proto-oncogene that encodes for HGFR (hepatocyte growth factor receptor, also known as MET), possessing tyrosine kinase activity.
  • Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is the only known ligand of the MET receptor.
  • MET induces several biologic responses that collectively give rise to invasive growth.

Role in Cancer

  • Abnormal MET activation in cancer correlates with poor prognosis, where uncontrolled MET triggers tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis.
  • MET deregulation (MET and HGF amplifications, MET mutations) has been implicated in many types of cancer, including kidney, liver, gastric, esophageal, breast, brain, nd melanoma.
